There are 3 types of Faults,Strike-Slip Faults,Normal Faults and Reverse Faults. In a Strike-Slip Fault, the rocks on both sides slip past each other sideways with little up or down motion. In a Normal Fault, it is at an angle, and one rock lies on top of the other.A reverse fault has the same structure as a Normal Fault, but the rocks switch places and go in the opposite direction. These occur in the cycle of an earthquake.
Strike-Slip Faults are faced horizontally, and they release there energy by rock displacement in that direction parallel to compressional force. The lower wall of the fault is called the footwall. The one on top of it is called the hangingwall. When the rocks slip past each other it is known as Strike-Slip Faulting.Normal Faults are faced diagonally and they occur where 2 blocks of rock are pulled apart by tension. One block of land slips downward in relation to the block on the other side of the fault.Reverse Faults are also faced diagonally but in a different direction. They occur when 2 blocks of rock are forced together by compression. They are the exact oppisite of normal faults. The hanging wall is higher than the footwall this time.
